HDR deghosting for moving subjects is the processing step that decides which version of a changing object belongs in the final image.
For photographers, this is the difference between an HDR merge that looks natural and one that immediately reveals how it was made. Good deghosting lets you use exposure bracketing in scenes that are not perfectly still, without wasting brackets or spending time painting corrections by hand.
Why moving subjects create ghosts in HDR
An HDR image combines multiple exposures of the same scene. One frame may protect bright highlights, another may reveal midtones, and a longer exposure may recover shadow detail. The camera captures those frames seconds, or fractions of a second, apart. Anything that moves during that interval changes position from frame to frame.
When software blends the exposures without accounting for that change, it can pull pixels from several positions into one output. A walking person may have translucent edges. Leaves may look fuzzy rather than crisp. Waves can show repeated patterns, and passing vehicles can become partially transparent.
Movement is not always obvious while shooting. A real-estate bracket may look static until a ceiling fan rotates or a curtain shifts near a window. In a landscape, branches, grasses, clouds, and water are all moving subjects. Even a handheld camera can introduce apparent movement across the entire frame, which is why alignment and deghosting solve related but different problems.

What deghosting actually does
Deghosting compares the aligned exposures and identifies areas that do not match. Rather than blending all versions of a moving object, it selects a single reference exposure for that region. The final HDR image can then retain the expanded tonal range of the static scene while keeping the moving subject in one clear position.
That selection involves a trade-off. Stronger deghosting is more willing to treat differences between frames as motion. This is useful for pedestrians, vehicles, tree branches, and other obvious changes. But if set too aggressively, it can mistake fine texture, subtle lighting variation, or image noise for movement. The result may be less smooth tonal blending in the affected area.
Lighter deghosting preserves more blended information and can look cleaner in a nearly still scene. It may not be enough when foliage is blowing or people are crossing the frame. There is no single best setting for every bracket. The right level depends on how much changed, how fast it changed, and how visible the subject is in the composition.
Choosing an HDR deghosting level for moving subjects
Start with the lowest setting that removes visible duplication. This protects the natural texture and tonal transitions that HDR is meant to preserve. If the subject still has halos, repeated edges, or transparent areas, increase the level and preview again.
Low deghosting usually suits interiors where only a curtain, a small plant, or distant movement outside a window has changed. Moderate deghosting is often the practical default for travel scenes, handheld city photography, and architecture with occasional foot traffic. Higher settings are better when motion is a meaningful part of the frame, such as wind-blown foliage, a busy street, moving water, or people walking through a lobby.
The strongest setting is not automatically the safest setting. If a tree fills much of the composition and every leaf shifts between exposures, the software has limited stable detail to work with. Strong deghosting can choose one exposure for much of that tree, which prevents ghosts but may reduce the HDR benefit in those areas. That is usually preferable to a smeared result, but it is worth recognizing the compromise.
A useful test is to inspect high-contrast edges at 100 percent. Look around a subject against a bright sky, a person passing in front of a window, or railings behind moving branches. These areas reveal ghosting faster than broad, low-detail surfaces.
Shoot brackets that give deghosting a better chance
Deghosting can solve a great deal, but the cleanest HDR begins with a tight bracket sequence. Use auto exposure bracketing when possible so the camera captures the exposures quickly and consistently. A three-frame bracket is often enough for moderate contrast; five or seven frames can help in extreme interiors, sunsets, and window-heavy scenes, but longer sequences create more opportunity for movement.
Keep the camera steady. A tripod helps with architecture and low-light work, while careful handheld shooting can work when shutter speeds are fast. Frame the shot, stabilize your stance, and trigger the bracket without recomposing between exposures. Alignment can correct small shifts, but it cannot restore detail that was blurred by camera shake.
Pay attention to shutter speed in the brightest and darkest frames. The shadow exposure is often the longest, making it the most vulnerable to moving leaves, water, and people. If motion matters, consider raising ISO slightly or opening the aperture where depth of field allows. A cleaner, faster bracket may produce a better final file than a technically lower-ISO sequence with extensive motion blur.
For scenes with a single moving person or vehicle, timing is often more effective than processing. Wait until the subject occupies a simple background, or take a second bracket once the scene clears. For a property listing, it can be faster to make one empty-room bracket than to depend on deghosting to remove someone crossing multiple doorways.
Detect, merge, and export without manual sorting
The hard part of HDR is often not the merge itself. It is finding the related exposures after a long shoot, checking whether the camera grouped them correctly, and keeping those brackets separate from near-identical single shots.

When deghosting cannot create a perfect merge

A hand-held flag, dense crowd, or nearby branch moving across a detailed background can hide information needed from another exposure.
In these cases, choose the cleanest reference frame for the moving region and prioritize a believable image over maximum tonal recovery. You may accept slightly darker shadows in a moving tree, for example, while preserving a crisp silhouette and clean sky. HDR should not look like every pixel received identical treatment. It should look like one well-exposed photograph.
If the subject itself is your priority, a single exposure may be the better choice. Bracketing is most valuable when the scene’s contrast exceeds what one frame can hold. For sports, active children, or close wildlife, a fast single exposure protects the decisive moment better than a multi-frame merge.
